2022-2023 EHS Kindergarten

Today we learned about the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day.  We watched a video  Orange Shirt Day-Residential Schools  and learned about Phyllis and her orange shirt. We talked about how every child matters and why it is so important to spread kindness to everyone.  We have been colour mixing and we mixed orange to paint orange shirts today. We read "You Hold Me Up" and talked about the ways we help one another.  We read, "The Sharing Circle" and had our own sharing circle  shared what makes us happy. We used a talking stick and talked about being respectful of each person in the circle. We need to wait for our turn patiently and use active listening while our friends are sharing.  PM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson. We made pattern sticks by beading beads onto pipe cleaners. Ask your child what pattern they made.  Today was fun snack. Today was picture day at school!  We had a great time smiling for the camera! The AM classes had music with Mrs. Coulson.  Please ask your child what they did in the music room. PM Kindergarten had gym with Mrs. Mask. All learners had library book exchange and we wrote in our journals.   We continue to explore 5 Star drawing when working in our journals: 1. Colours make sense 2. Color in the lines (no white spaces) 3. Use many colours 4. Take your time (no scribbles) 5. Add many details Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day. We had a busy day at school. We worked on patterns. We read, "Pattern Fish" (AM ) and "Pattern Bugs" (PM). We learned about the core of the pattern and practiced labelling our patterns. We practiced making many patterns using loose parts. Practice making some patterns at home.  We read, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and talked about the first letter in our names. We made the letters with our bodies, playdough and nature items. We learned a new letter game to help us learn the letters in the alphabet. Have your child make their name at home with items found outside or inside the house. We are working on making class colour boards to put up on our wall in the class to help us when we are talking about colours or writing in our journals.  AM Kindergarten practiced their first fire drill. Thank you to all the families who attended our Welcome Evening on Thursday. It was lovely to see and chat with so many of you. We loved watching your children show their families around the room and talk about Kindergarten. We apologize if we didn't get to chat with everyone as it was very busy! If there was anything you would like to share with your child's teacher please email and let us know.  We started our day with new arrival centers. We are practicing skills such as cutting, colouring, sorting, patterning, counting and alphabet recognition.  AM Kindergarten finished working on our Mouse Paint colour mixing. We continued to explore with primary colours. AM Kindergarten had music and gym with Mrs. Coulson and Mrs. Watterson.  PM Kindergarten worked in their writing journals. Today we finished all our all about me bags. It was so nice to learn about all of our friends in the class.  We continued to explore colour mixing. We read, "Mouse Paint" and looked at what happens when we mix the primary colours. Ask your child what happens when we mix them.  AM Kindergarten had library exchange today. PM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson.  We learned about patterns. We practiced sorting 2 groups of items and making an AB pattern. We practiced making a pattern with actions and with loose parts. Can you practice making an AB pattern at home? As a reminder there is NO school tomorrow as it is a PD day.  We look forward to seeing many of the families this evening! 

Today was International Peace Day. We talked about how we can build peaceful communities in our class. We read, "The Peace Book" by Todd Parr and talked about what peace means to us. We created a peace quilt for our classroom and each child drew what peace means to them in sharpie markers. You will be able to see our work tomorrow at our welcome to EHS evening.  We had writing Wednesday and we read the story, "My Heart Fills With Happiness" and drew what makes our heart happy in our writing journals. We drew pictures and used our "swirly" printing to share our ideas about happiness. AM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson. PM Kindergarten had gym and library exchange. We had so much fun exploring with colours today! After we had arrival centers, we experimented with blue, red and yellow paints. Ask your child what they discovered when they mixed the colours together.  We learned about primary and secondary colours. We did a colour hunt around the room.  We read, "Sort It Out" and practiced different ways of sorting items.  We had more friends present their all about me bags. We are really enjoying getting to know everyone and  what makes them unique.  AM Kindergarten went outside for a exercise break and PM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson.  We had centers.  Tomorrow is library exchange for PM Kindergarten. Happy Monday!  Today was a great day at school!   We had new arrival centers and our learners were very excited to try them all out.  We read, "Mouse Shape" and talked about shapes we see in our world. We looked at squares and practiced drawing them on whiteboards and looked at making different things out of squares. PM kindergarten practiced sorting buttons. We played a game with a partner where we sorted buttons and our partner had to guess our sorting rule. Try playing this game at home.   The AM learners had music with Mrs. Coulson and gym with Mrs. Watterson.  Please ask your child what they did in music and gym today! PM Kindergarten went to the gym with Mrs. Mask Your child should have brought home a coloured folder at the end of the last week.(AM classes) PM classes will be sent home tomorrow.  We will use these folders to send important papers to and from school.  When you receive the folder at home, please empty it and send it back ...

We started our day with cooperative games and puzzles.  We practiced sorting buttons in a variety of ways. Can you practice sorting items at home in a variety of ways such as colour, size and shape. We read, "Going on A Bear hunt" and talked about going outside to explore our community.  We had a wonderful walk in our community and explored "Teepee Forest". Thank you to our volunteers who came with us on our walk. It is much appreciated :) We read the story, "A Closer Look" and then we used magnifying glasses to look closely at our nature space. We talked about describing the items we found. We then used paint chips and went to find the same colours in nature. Our last activity was to find 6 items each and then with a partner sort the items. We ended off our time with some play on the playground. We came back to school and had snack and some centers. Have a wonderful weekend !
