Tuesday January 31

 Today we read, "Where Happiness Begins" and we talked about the things that make us happy and feel calm. We looked at the Green Zone and talked about what it looks like and what it feels like to be in the green zone. We talked about ways to get back to the green zone when we start to feel like we are going into a different zone. We practiced 5 candle breathing and talked about ways that can help us get back to feeling calm like getting a hug, having some alone time, having a dance party, exercise,  colouring, talking about our feelings etc. Ask your child what helps to get back into the green zone when they start to feel low or bigger emotions.  We drew a picture of our faces when we are happy and added it to our visual journal for a zone collage we are making. We did a math problem today, "How many snowmen can you make with 10 snowballs?" We used counters to try and figure out many ways to solve the problem. PM Kindergarten had music. 

Monday January 30

 Today we started our morning with new arrival centers. Ask your child what they did. We learned about the letter K and the sound it makes. We learned the jolly phonics letter k song and practiced printing the letter k in our printing books. We added 3 things that begin with k. Can you find items at home that start with K? AM Kindergarten had music and gym and PM Kindergarten had gym. We practiced printing our numbers from 1-10 and played a dice game to add the sum of the dice and write the number down on the board. We challenged some of our learners to write addition sentences. We had centers.  Upcoming dates: Friday February 3 PD Day - no school

Today we read, "How Full Is Your Bucket?" and talked about how each of us have an invisible bucket. We talked about ways we can fill each others buckets. We drew in our visual journals what fills our own buckets. We played math games with a partner. We got to choose from any of the games we have been practicing. All of the games involve dice or counting ten frames.  We did STEM centers where each center had a challenge. The centers included:  1-blocks and cards- build the tallest tower 2-marbles and playdough- create a marble maze on a baking sheet 3-lego and blocks- build a bridge to get over the river 4-straws and connectors-build a structure taller than you 5-explore and play in sand and water

Thursday January 26

We learned about letter F and read " Fifi Farret's Flute". We practiced the sound letter f makes and had to pick out all the words in the story that begin with F. We practiced printing the letter F in our printing books and drew 3 things that begin with F. Can you find items at home that begin with F. We continued to talk about the zones of regulation and painted the coloured zones in our visual journals. We practiced printing the numbers 1-12 and then played a dice game where we rolled 2 dice and had to add the sum. We practiced counting on from the biggest number and writing the sum on the whiteboard.  PM Kindergarten went to the gym for a special presentation from  the Calgary TaiChi and Martial Arts College. The performers were so engaging to watch. Ask your child about their favourite event the performers did.  PM Kindergarten had music.  Tomorrow is AM kindergarten. Today was a great day at school!  It is writing Wednesday.  Today we wrote about our favourite winter activity.  Some of us are labelling our pictures with the first sounds we hear in words and some of us are copying print to tell our stories. We continued to explore the Zones of Regulation and our feelings.  We listened to the story "The Way I Feel" and then we used loose parts to make some of the feelings we heard in the story. We listened to the mood walk and practiced how different emotions look and feel.  The AM class had music with Mrs. Coulson. PM Kindergarten played tag games in the gym. We read, 'Everybody' by Elise Gravel and talked about what everyone needs and how we are all similar and all have our differences. We introduced the Zones of Regulation and talked about what each zone means and how we feel in each zone. Ask your child about what they learned about the zones. We practiced our cutting skills and created a class coloured board for the different zones.  We practiced drawing faces on whiteboards about what our faces look like when we are feeling different emotions. We read different scenarios and had to decide what zone it would be.  We encourage our learners to continue to practice their cutting skills at home. Some ideas include: Practice cutting up the recycling from flyers. Help make a grocery list by cutting up items your family needs. Today we started our morning with arrival centers. During this time, we have our learners switch their home reading and visit the library. Thank you to everyone working so hard with their children with their home reading! :) We read, "Hide and Seek Hippo" and learned about the letter H. We found words that begin with the letter h and learned the jolly phonics song and sound for H. We practiced printing letter H and drawing items that begin with h. Can you find items at home that start with H. AM Kindergarten had music and gym. PM Kindergarten had gym. Ask your child what they did. We learned about Lunar New Year and watched a video about the holiday. We learned that it is the year of the rabbit and did a guided drawing of a rabbit in our visual journals.  UPCOMING DATES Friday January 27 AM Kindergarten

We had a busy day at school today. We started our day with arrival centers.  We did a guided drawing of our winter animal to add to our animal fact about what animals do in Winter.  We read, "Rosie Rabbits Radish" and learned about the letter R. We practiced printing R in our books and drew things that begin with R. Can you find items in your home that begin with R? We looked at ways to make 10. We practiced making ten by using blocks  and dividing them in groups of two. We practiced writing out addition sentences. We sang the  Number song to 10  to help us remember some of the ways to make 10.  We had fun snack. Today we had writing Wednesday. We wrote about our favourite animal and why. We copied from the board, "I like ______. It can_______. We are working on trying sound out beginning sounds (some learners are working on stretching out the word and using beginning, middle and end sounds).We continue to focus on drawing neatly, adding details, colouring in the lines and copying print from the board.  AM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson. PM Kindergarten had gym. We looked at our Animals in Winter Inquiry and wrote about what bats(AM) and frogs (PM) do in winter. We will be creating a card for each animal we learn about. We will be writing about what the animal does in winter and art.  We had centers.  As a reminder, please send your home reading to and from school in the coloured folders. Tuesday January 17

Today we started our inquiry into what happens to animals in winter. The AM Kindergarten started to  learn about bats and PM Kindergarten started to learn about frogs. Ask your child what they learned about the animals. We read non fiction stories and watched videos to help our understanding.  We learned about the letter E. We practiced printing the letter E in our printing booklets and drew 3 things that begin with E. We learned the jolly phonics letter E song. Can you find things at home that begin with E? We played power of ten math game with a partner. When playing the game we are trying to reinforce subitizing ( recognizing/identifying at a glance) so that we aren't counting the ten frames by 1's. Monday January 16

Today we had new arrival centers and started our home reading program. Your child chose 1 book to bring home and read this evening. In their coloured folder you will find a note to explain about home reading and a reading log. Please record the book only 1 time on the recording sheet. (Even though we encourage you to practice the story several times) Your child can exchange their book daily. This is meant to be a fun way to get your child engaged in the reading process so have fun with them when reading the books.  Happy Reading! :) If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.  We read, "Over and Under the Snow" and talked about what animals do in Winter.  Happy Friday!  We hope everyone has a chance to get outside and enjoy the beautiful winter weather this weekend! Today was a busy day at school.  We started with arrival centers.  Then a group of grade 3/4's from Ms. Low's class came and performed a Reader's Theatre.  It was the story of "Snow White" and we enjoyed all the voices the students used for the characters. We did a guided drawing of a snowman and used water colors to paint it.  We then continued to explore numbers, today breaking apart the number 10. We watched "The Snowman".  This video has no words and we enjoyed telling the story as it went. We had snack and centers. We went outside to play at the park.

Tomorrow is AM Kindergarten.  Please send warm gear as we will be going outside for a movement break! Today we learned about the letter D. We read, "Detective Dog and The Disappearing Dooughnuts" we had to pick out all the words that beginning with D. We did our printing booklets and drew things that begin with D. In Math, we worked learned how to break numbers apart and make math sentences.  We used our playdough to make 5 balls then practiced ways to build 5 using the pencil as the dividing line.  Then we used the number 8 and broke it apart.
