 Today we had Writing Wednesday. Our learners are using the word wall to help them write sentences. We have been practicing finding the words we need and then trying to sound out unfamiliar words with the beginning, middle and end sounds.  AM Kindergarten had music, We continued to work on math problem solving. We picked out the important information and then had to solve the problem in a many ways. We looked at drawing pictures, using tally marks, ten frames, number line and writing an equation to show our work.  We continued with learning about insects. Both AM and PM kindergarten chose butterflies to learn about. We read, "Life as a Butterfly" and watch sci kids video from caterpillar to butterfly. We used our visual journals to draw a butterfly and write some interesting facts we learned about butterflies. Field trip forms for Butterfield Acres went home today. Today we read, " I Love Bugs" and talked about the different bugs we know about and want to learn more about. We voted using counters to pick what bugs we would like to learn more about over the next couple of days. AM kindergarten voted to learn more about butterflies and bees. PM kindergarten voted to learn more about butterflies and spiders.  We looked at the ladybugs today and read, "Are You A Ladybug?" and talked about what we learned from the book. We did a guided drawing of a ladybug in our visual journals and painted them with watercolours. We wrote some interesting facts about ladybugs. We learned about problem solving in math. We worked on a problem and learned to pick out the important information in the problem before we can solve the problem. We started our morning by visiting  Jessie Fiddler-Kiss. Jessie is a Métis Knowledge Keeper  and is helping us make a set of drums for our school. We got to watch her start to make a drum and she talked about the what we use to make the drum.  We read ,"This Is How We Do It", it is a book about 7 children from around the world and shows about the daily life of the children. We looked at the similarities and differences between our lives and how others live. We drew self portraits with sharpies and then coloured them in with pencil crayon.  We are going to be adding them to a community play center.   We read, "Maybe Something Beautiful" and talked about our own community. We made colourful communities in our visual journal. We used different patterned paper to create our homes and community. We will be creating a big class community for our dramatic play.  We went outside to play and had centers. Have a great weekend.

 Today we read, "Rhyming Dust Bunnies" and did a guided drawing with sharpies of the dust bunny. We painted it with water colour and then chose a word and had to rhyme 3 words . We wrote all the words beside the dust bunny. We played a rhyming game where we had to pick out the rhyming word and write it on our whiteboard.  We practiced adding using 2 dice. We rolled the dice, recorded the numbers and then added the 2 numbers together.  We worked on making sure the numbers are going the right direction. PM Kindergarten continued with measurement and we used non standard units to measure items around the class. We recorded the measurement number on the whiteboards.  PM Kindies have music, some of our AM Kindies had the chance to go play a game in the gym with Mrs. B, the substitute teacher. Today was Writing Wednesday. We worked on writing a complete sentence to go with our pictures. We know that we can use our word wall to help us and we can put down the beginning, middle and end sounds we hear in words. We looked at home we need to use an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence and punctuation at the end of the sentence. We looked a measurement. We practiced using many different items(non-standard units ) to measure our shoes. AM Kindergarten had music and PM Kindergarten went outside. We read, "Frog On A Log" and used our visual journals to make a page that could be added to the book. We read, "I Want a Dog" and then we uses scrap pieces of paper to cut out our own dog to create in our visual journals.  We practiced rhyming words and did some movement breaks with rhyming and practiced writing rhyming words on whiteboards. We played our " knock out" math game. Today we read ,"This Is How We Do It", it is a book about 7 children from around the world and shows about the daily life of the children. We looked at the similarities and differences between our lives and how others live. We drew self portraits with sharpies and then coloured them in with pencil crayon.  We are going to be adding them to a community play center.   We read, "Maybe Something Beautiful" and talked about our own community. We made colourful communities in our visual journal. We used different patterned paper to create our homes and community. We will be creating a big class community for our dramatic play.  We played knock out dice game with a group of peers. If you roll the "knock out number" you are out of the game. You play until one person is left in the game.  Have a wonderful long weekend. Lion King Costuming Reminder   all Kindergarten children are asked to wear all black clothes (pants and shirt - can be long sleeved or short sleeved) for both shows.  If need be, clothing can be turned inside out so that it is solid black.   Thank you so much for your help! Thursday May 18- Lion King Performances- PM Kindergarten (1:30pm and 5:30pm) If you are bringing your child back for the 5:30pm show, please arrive at school at 5:15pm and enter through the side doors of the building by the teachers parking lot.  The Kindergarten children will come to the classroom to meet the teachers and get their animal hats on.  Parents will be invited to get their seats in the gym.  We will bring the students to the gym for show time!   Please pick your child up in the Kindergarten classroom after the show. Today the AM Kindergarten had their Lion King performance. They did such a wonderful job!  AM Kindergarten did their journals for Writing Wednesday. PM Kindergarten did some writing around Spring. We are working trying to put down all the letter sounds we hear in words when we are writing.  We read, "Lucy Ladybird" and then we did an art/math activity with ladybugs. Wednesday May 10

Today was a busy day in Kindergarten. We were getting everything ready for our celebration of learning tomorrow. We had the chicks out on a mat today and we watched them all run around. Our learners loved watching and petting the chicks. Each chick definitely has its own personality. We completed our final page in our chick booklets which we will share with you tomorrow. If you are unable to attend the celebration of learning, your child will be bringing work home to share with you. AM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson and PM Kindergarten played games in the gym.  We had Writing Wednesday and had free choice writing. Many of our learners wrote about the chicks. We are getting lots of practice with our writing and our learners have shown a lot of progress over this past year. Today we spent time with the chicks. We watched them and got to pet each one. Afterwards, we added a page to our chick booklets about which chick is our favourite and why.  We were busy getting ready for our celebration of learning. We are practicing how to share about our learning about chicks. We talked about the importance of giving lots of details when we are talking about the chicks.  AM Kindergarten went outside and PM Kindergarten had music. Today was a very exciting day in Kindergarten. 2 more chicks hatched over the weekend. Mrs. Mask got to care for the baby chicks at her house so her children helped in naming the chicks.  Meet Vader. Born on May 4th (Darth Vader. Since he is black, we saw it fitting for all the Star Wars fans:)  Meet Spots born on May 6th.  Unfortunately, none of the other eggs have hatched but we have 4 healthy chicks in our class for the children to enjoy. We got a chance to look at them closely today and pet the chicks. The children are loving watching them move around and peck at everything.  AM Kindergarten had music and gym. Today we had another egg hatch during the morning. So now both AM and PM have witness an egg hatch. We named the chicks. We took all names, placed them in a hat and took out 4 names. We then voted to pick the name for our chicks.  AM Kindergarten chose the name for chick from egg #1. Meet Buttercup.  PM Kindergarten chose the name for chick from egg #2. Meet Fluffy. Buttercup needs to stay in the incubator until tomorrow and Fluffy has moved into a bigger space to be able to move around.  We did a page for our chick booklets. We had to draw what the first chick looked like. And we labelled the body parts of a chick, hen and rooster. We had literacy groups and had big centers.
