Friday March 24

Happy March Break to all our Kindergarten families!  We hope that you enjoy your break from school! Today we had music and gym with Mrs. Coulson and Mrs. Watterson.  We went to the gym to watch the grade 3/4 Peace Assembly. They did an outstanding job. It was all about Water. Ask your child what they learned about and their favourite part.  We began to talk about Spring. We read, "Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring" and talked about the changes we notice during Spring. We will be using our sense to discover spring. We did a guided drawing of a bird in a nest in our visual journals.  Lion King Play  - as a school we will be presenting the Lion King in May.  Kindergarten will be involved in the show as members of the "Pride Land".  Please watch your email for show dates and ticket information.  As part of the production we  are asking that every child bring in a ball cap that fits their child's head well, to use as part of their costume for our Lion ...

Thursday March 23

Today we continued to look at 3D shapes. We were looking at what shapes slide, stack and roll. We used ramps and tested all the objects. We then talked about items that only did one, two or all three. Ask your child what they observed. We used all our senses today to pop popcorn. Ask your child how they used all 5 senses for this activity. We read, " Frog on a Log" and practiced making rhyming words. We used alphabet dice (PM) and alphabet cards (AM) to make words that rhyme with the "og" word family.  AM Kindergarten went outside and PM Kindergarten has music with Mrs. Coulson. PM Kindergarten brought home their certificate of participation cards from swimming, please check your child's backpack. Today was Writing Wednesday. We wrote about all the things we see. Our sentence was "I see..." Our learners has to draw at least 6 things in their picture and label their drawings with beginning (middle and end ) sounds that they could identify.  We continued with our exploration of the 5 senses. Today we learned about our sense of smell. We did a smell test and had to figure out what was in the mystery containers. We talked about good and bad smells and drew about them in our visual journals. AM Kindergarten had music and PM Kindergarten had gym.  In gym, we are working on basketball skills. We are learning to dribble, catch and pass the ball.  We looked at 3D shapes and focused on describing them. We played mystery item and had to choose a 3D shape and describe it to a partner. Today at school we explored our sense of taste!  We watched a video that explained how our tongues taste foods. We had a taste test at school to explore our taste buds.  We tried salty (pretzel), sweet (a Skittle), sour (lemon) and bitter (unsweetened baking chocolate).  Please ask your child what foods they liked and didn't like in our taste test.  We all were very excited to taste the chocolate but were very disappointed when it wasn't what we were expecting. We drew pictures of foods we like in our journal. We went outside to play. Today was a great day at school!  We continue to explore our 5 senses.  Today we looked at the sense of touch.  We talked about the describing words soft, bumpy, rough, smooth.  We filled our journal page with these items and labelled them.   We had centers and snack.  In math, we began exploring 3D shapes.  We used playdoh and toothpicks to try and build our own 3D shapes. AM Kindie had gym with Mrs. Watterson and music with Mrs. Coulson. Happy St. Patrick's Day. We started our day with table centers. Playing a variety of literacy, math and cooperative games. We read, "A Little Spot Interviews a Leprechaun" and then we did a guided drawing of a leprechaun and coloured him in. We cut him out and then used loose parts to make a home for him. We went and enjoyed the sunshine outside. Have a lovely weekend! Thursday March 16

Today was picture day. The children had class photos and individual pictures.  We did the last letter in the alphabet today. We have now focused on all the uppercase letters of the alphabet. We worked on the letter Q and the sound it makes. We learned the jolly phonics letter Q song and practiced printing the letter Q in our printing books. We added 3 things that begin with Q. Can you find items at home that start with Q? It was fun snack.  We played with the geoboards and pattern blocks. Creating different pictures with all the shapes.  We read, "Spiky, Slimy, Smooth: What is Texture?" We used mystery bags and had to describe the items in the bags without looking. We learned about different texture words to describe items.  PM Kindergarten had music.  Friday is PM Kindergarten.  We will be going outside. Today was Writing Wednesday and we worked in our journals. As writers, we are working on using sentence starters such as I like, I can, I see, etc. We have been practicing stretching out words and writing down the sounds we hear. We continue to label our drawings with beginning sounds and familiar words. We continued to focus on the 5 Senses. Today we learned about the sense of hearing and did a hearing game. We listened to sounds and had to draw what we thought the sound was. We read, "The Perfect Fit" a book about shapes and continued to look at 2D shapes. We  used pattern blocks and geoboards to create shape pictures. We then had to count up the number of shapes we used in our pictures.  AM Kindergarten had music and PM Kindergarten had gym.  Friday is PM Kindergarten.  We will be going outside. We started learning about the 5 Senses today. We drew a page in our visual journals to start our investigation about 5 senses. We labelled another page with sight and then used magazines to cut out pictures of things we enjoy looking at.  We started learning about 2D shapes. We reviewed all the shapes we knew and did a shape hunt around the classroom. We described the shapes and practiced drawing the shapes on whiteboards, as we found them.  We practiced writing beginning sounds of words on whiteboards. Happy Monday!  Today was a great day at school.  We had centers and snack. The AM kids had music with Mrs. Coulson and gym with Mrs. Watterson. Please ask your child what they did.  The PM kids had gym and played the game "Pirate's Treasure". We also practiced throwing and catching skills with a partner.  We worked on the letter X in our printing books.  X is the second last letter in the alphabet that we need to finish.  We learned about thank you notes and wrote a thank you to the Calgary Public Library for the fabulous story time we had last week. Home reading book exchange and library book exchange is up and running again this week.  Please have your child exchange their books. Monday March 6- Thursday March 9

There will be no daily blog or pictures this week, as we will be at the pool for the majority of the day.  Thank you to all of our parents who are volunteering their time to come and help out. We appreciate all your support. As a reminder, please check your email and sign up for parent teacher conferences. We look forward to seeing you all Thursday or Friday.  As a note, Mrs. Mask is available Thursday afternoon for interviews. It is a regular day for PM Kindergarten. Mrs. Watterson and Ms. Fox will be supervising at the pool.  A school messenger was sent out about important information regarding swimming lessons. Welcome to Our Scholastic Book Fair!   Mrs. Conley's AM class and PM Kindergarten had inline skating. Thank you to our volunteers for coming and helping get the children geared up! We appreciate you lending us your time and efforts.  Mrs. Mask's worked in our journals.
