Wednesday September 7

Today was a great day at school!  Our name tags were hanging on our hook and we are all very excited to hang our backpacks on our very own hook!

We started our day with arrival centers.  Please ask your child what they played with when they arrived at school.

Today is Writing Wednesday at school.  Each Wednesday at school we will "write" in our journals.  In the beginning of Kindergarten, writing will look like pictures that we draw.  As we progress through the year we will add letters, words and even sentences to our writing.  In September of Kindergarten we work with students to draw pictures that are easily identifiable and accurately coloured, for example, we will encourage students to use yellow to colour the sun and think about their hair color and adding all body parts when drawing themselves.  In our journal today, we drew a picture of something we like.  It is great to start to learn so much about our new learners.

We completed a paper person in our visual journals.  We used scissors to cut fancy paper to make clothes for our paper person.  We learned the proper way to use scissors: thumb up, use your other hand as a helper to turn the paper and no chicken wings (arms tucked into sides).  We highly encourage all children to use scissors at home to improve their cutting at school.  Please have your child cut up magazines or old scrap paper.

AM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson today.  Please ask your child what they did in music.

Friday September 9 is AM Kindergarten (8:20-11:55am).  Only the AM children will attend this day.

Today we had writing Wednesday. We wrote about our favourite animal and why. We copied from the board, "I like ______. It can_______. We are working on trying sound out beginning sounds (some learners are working on stretching out the word and using beginning, middle and end sounds).We continue to focus on drawing neatly, adding details, colouring in the lines and copying print from the board.  AM Kindergarten had music with Mrs. Coulson. PM Kindergarten had gym. We looked at our Animals in Winter Inquiry and wrote about what bats(AM) and frogs (PM) do in winter. We will be creating a card for each animal we learn about. Wednesday April 12

Today we had writing Wednesday. We read, "Helpers in my Community" and talked about who are the helpers we see in our community. We discussed what we would like to be when we grow up. Our learners drew a picture in their journal and wrote, "I am a ___". Ask your child what they want to be when they grow up. We did a rhyming activity with whiteboards. Our learners had to pick what words rhymed and print the word on their whiteboards.  We did math groups. Our learners broke into our math groups and worked on number activities. Monday November 28

Today was a great day at school.  We learned about the letter N. We read " The Nicest Newt" and had to find all the words that began with N. We learned the jolly phonics song for N and practiced the actions for all the letters we have been learning. (S, A, T, I, P, N) We practiced printing the letter N in our printing journals. The AM classes had gym and music.  Please ask your child what they did. PM class went to gym and did stations to practice skills such as catching, throwing, kicking and target practice.  We are very lucky to have some new centers to play with!  Thank you to the casino funds for allowing us to purchase the new toys.  The kinders loved playing the new cooperative game "Hoot Owl Hoot" and playing with the magnatiles.
